First "Living with PCOS" TalkCast is recorded

Last weekend, June 16, 2007, we had our very first "Living with PCOS" TalkCast. It is recorded on TalkShoe.com and anyone can listen in to the recording. Just search for PCOS on the webpage and it should bring you right to my TalkCast. This first TalkCast lasted for about 15 minutes and was just a nice way to start off these monthly support meetings. I'm planning to have them on the third Saturday of every month unless there is a scheduling conflict.

My intent is to post to the different PCOS forums to see about drumming up some interest in this online support group. I do hope that it takes off because I'd love to talk to other women (and their significant others) about PCOS, how they are handling it, the good, the bad, the ugly...the whole nine yards.

Any help in getting the word out so we have some participation is always appreciated. The next scheduled "Living with PCOS" TalkCast is on July 21, 2007 at 9am.

Just a few weeks ago (June 2008) I was diagnosed with PCOS. I was horrified and relieved. I have an extended family member with it, and I just recall you only gain weight, facial hair, and continue to loose hair on the crown of your head. Besides that, I knew nothing more about this disease.

Yet I'm relieved, as I've always known "something" was going on inside of me and now I know for several years I've been mis-diagnosed or... my cysts were never noticed after a Laparoscopy about 9 years ago for endometriosis. I still had excruciating pain 2 months after the procedure, and always in the exact same spot, where my left ovary is. I went through Lupron treatments for six months (which was wonderful), but when that was over and my period came back, so did the same pain. I've switched GYN doctor's about 4 times since that doctor and none thought or mentioned PCOS.

I had my first baby almost 4 years ago at 39 yrs. old. From that point on I don't think I've lost the baby weight and I continue to gain weight. It has made no sense to me, as I eat healthy and active as anyone with a toddler. I've asked myself why the massive weight gain over the last 8-9 months. I've always noticed the fine hair on the top of my head. Yet the loss of it is so evident now.

During a routine visit to my primary Doctor a month ago, he notice the thinning of my hair. Talked to me about ovaries, cysts, and then wanted to do a sonogram for possibly PCOS. My results came back and my left ovary is at least twice the size of my right ovary, and the cysts in my left ovary are larger then my right ovary. The CAT scan was next.

I'm 44 years old. I believe I've had this prior to meeting my husband 20+ years ago. I have so many questions, yet I have to wait 3 more weeks for my GYN appointment to ask my questions. I've read a lot on line over these past 2 weeks, and needless to say... I'm scared of the unknown now that I know having the ovary removed or a full hysterectomy won't resolve this. UGH!!! I'm use to being in "control" of things, and apparently this will control me.

I found this podcast and I'm grateful for Deirdra's audio podcast! Deirdra, if possible, please e-mail me the description of PCOS that you read on the first podcast. I think (as you mentioned as well) that giving that description to a few of my family members and friends will be the best explanation to them of what I have. I also need to read it again myself!

I am relieved, as now I have answers to so many things I questioned about myself, including the fatigue I've had for several years that my doctor's kept telling me to just "loose some weight and I'll feel better". Because after loosing weight, the fatigue was always there.

Anyway... my journey has taken a new turn. I meet with a new GYN in a few weeks and I will set up an appointment with an Endocrinoligist too (as I'm told I'll need to). So my search is to find the best one on my insurance plan.
